Meet the Doctors

Doctors Robert and Richard are proud to follow in the footsteps of their father, Dr. Claude F. Burns, who began the practice in 1932. While he did not intentionally encourage either of his sons to pursue the profession, they both took similar paths and found themselves returning to Lewistown to join in working with their father.

Robert L. Burns, O.D.

Dr. Robert Burns is a graduate of Chief Logan High School class of 1965. He attended Messiah College and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, where he received his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1971. He and his wife, Sheila, reside in Reedsvile, where Sheila teaches piano and voice and is organist at their church. They have two daughters, Marie and Emily, and a son, Robert. Dr. Rob is a member of Rotary International and a past member of the Board of Directors of the Lewistown Hospital.

When not in the office, Rob enjoys sailing, cooking, surfing poilitical blogs, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Richard C. Burns, O.D.

Dr. Richard Burns holds a bachelor's degree in Biology from Thiel College in 1975 and his doctorate degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1979. He also lives in Reedsville with his wife Susan, who is a certified nutrition consultant. Their two daughters, Sarah and Rachel, have 'left the nest' with Sarah and her husband Michael, living in Arizona and Rachel living and working in Annville, PA.

Rich's other interests include photography, bicycling, and music, serving as director of his church choir, singing in a local a capella group called 'In Joy', and performing with his guitar at various venues in the community.

Both Robert and Richard are natives of Lewistown and are members of the American Optometric Associations, the Pennsylvania Optometric Association, as well as the Mid-Counties Optometric Society. They each are certified by the Pennsylvania board of Optometric Examiners in the optometric use of therapeutic medications and the treatment of glaucoma. They also serve in the capacity of adjunct staff with Lewistown Hospital as Allied Health Practitioners.

From the scheduling of your appointment, thru the skillful gathering of clinical data in pre-testing, to the final dispensing and adjustment of your glasses, your experience at Burns Eye Care is shaped, nurtured, and expertly carried out by the friendly and proficient members of our staff.

Angela Powell: Receptionist - Ange is likely the person to whom you're speaking when you schedule for an exam or receive confirmation of your next visit date. All of our staff are 'cross-trained' in many areas of office functions, but Ange does much of the transactions at the front desk.

Josephine (Jo) Morgan: Office & Operations Manager - Jo is our Office and Operations Manager. Having been here the longest, she is very adept in dealing with all administrative aspects of the practice. From handling questions about billing, to assisting patients in selecting just the right frames, Jo has a unique blend of congenial hospitality and friendly assistance that makes your visit with us a pleasant and assuring experience.

Candy Corbin: Optometric Assistant - Every eye examination requires the gathering of clinical data and technical information. Candy has empirical skills combined with a calm and gentle approach that puts our patients at ease. She understands the importance of earning your trust and has the empathy to respect your concerns for a pleasant and reassuring office experience.

Sue Ellen Haines: Optometric Assistant - Energy and Enthusiasm are the tools of a devoted assistant. Sue Ellen employs these features as she guides our patients thru the pre-testing procedures. With caring concern and a sense of personal pride, her prime objective is to provide you with the best clinical evaluation our patients have come to expect.

Donna Higgins: Optician/Frame Stylist/Technician - Donna came to us with many years of experience in the Optical world, including frame styling, frame adjustment, assembly, and repair, as well as contact lens care and instruction. Since then, she has expanded her range of skills to include patient history and pre-testing. Her jovial personality and Jersey accent are a delight to patients young and old.
